Taiga Glaze Firing

Taiga Glaze Firing

The Taiga range is a very special one for me. It’s my first time really experimenting with my own glazes, and especially with something in the mid-to-high firing range.

This glaze is particularly exciting because of how reactive it is to both temperature and other glazes. The bright blue you see here comes from mixing it with, and dipping it into, a clear glaze, which brings out this distinct crackle and glossy finish. On its own, the original mix gives a much darker blue-black with a lovely matte surface.

I’ve really enjoyed playing around with these combinations and trying to find the perfect firing for each one. It’s like a puzzle with an extraordinary number of variables — a five-minute difference in the soak, or a slightly slower ramp, can create a completely different outcome.

So I’m really pleased with how this little experiment turned out, and quite fascinated to see whether I can ever replicate it again!

For now, this will be the only kiln load of this glaze for a while. I’m trying to get better at recording and keeping track of my glaze recipes, as I’ve realised some have already been lost along the way. So this is a very limited little range.

Lots of love, and I hope you enjoy! x
